Yearly,
India's monsoon season causes massive destruction to the properties of the people. Worse, helpless victims die because there's no sufficient supply of drinking water and nutriments. Some are not able to survive the catastrophe and lose their lives in the middle of the storm. Such scenario occurred in Guwahati, Assam.
A couple of weeks ago, almost 15,000 Guwahati residents were forced by the massive floodwaters to evacuate their homes and go to higher grounds minutes after the riverbanks were not able to contain the flood. The water overflowed and swept the homes of the defenseless people. Buried under floodwaters are the tea plantations and oil sources in Guwahati.
In 2004, Guwahati also suffered when a storm hit the town. Almost twelve million people ended up homeless while the death-toll reached 200. Fortunately, a few days ago, Guwahati was warned prior to the destructive flood. Although there were no casualties, the victims are still susceptible to bacterial diseases. At this point in time, the people are sheltered by evacuation centers. Their homes and plantations have been eroded. We can only hope that when the storm is over,
Guwahati residents would be able to find means to start a new life.
